YPSMS

The YPSMS is a Substance Misuse Service for Young People up to the age of 25.

· The YPSMS is a specialist service within the existing DRUG and ALCOHOL Services, it isnt a separate service.

· It is a complementary addition to the existing adult DRUG and ALCOHOL Service, which recognises the needs of young people.

· The emphasis of YPSMS is on quality not quantity.

· It is a specialist service for complex needs offering a diverse range of appropriate and accessible interventions, including non-medical.

· The service is not intended for all young people who use DRUGS or ALCOHOL

YPSMS is a joint initiative between the North East Wales NHS Trust, North West Wales NHS Trust, Conwy & Denbighshire NHS Trust and CAIS.

· The YPSMS is funded by the National Assembly for Wales with a contribution from the Youth Justice Board.

· The YPSMS is supported by the members of the North Wales Drug and Alcohol Forum.

What does YPSMS do?

CARE MANAGEMENT for those young people who present with very complex problems dominated by substance use issues which prevent them from working with other agencies, or agencies are unable to comprehend within their service provision / care plan framework.

The YPSMS worker may adopt a KEY WORKER role for young people already engaged with other agencies or when the presenting need is consistent with a substance misuse intervention only. The YPSMS Worker may adopt a wide range of interventions including sessional orientated work.

The YPSMS may provide CONSULTANCY intervention only to the professional as the issue of substance use MAY not present as a "problem" for the young person. Adopting this approach may prevent inappropriate provision for young people being referred to another service.

Work with specific groups may be appropriate PREVENTATIVE activities for the YPSMS. These groups will have to be identified as vulnerable young groups and predominantly under 19. Likely target groups are:

· Youth Offending Teams
· Excluded pupils
· Young people in Social Services' Residential Care, etc.
